Role
We are looking for entrepreneurial, motivated and smart individuals with expertise in Natural Language Processing and Python. Candidates with good experience in cloud deployment and a passion for well-engineered software are needed. The candidate must love Test Driven Development, possess an in-depth knowledge of Python and have a good understanding of AWS. Reporting to our CTO, you will be part of a collaborative and growing team based in our central London office.

As an NLP Engineer at Scalpel, you will be responsible for creating the next-generation algorithms for a Smart operating room. You will work with audio and text data to create interactive voice interfaces for clinical staff. Moreover, these models will be extended to predict potential risks in surgery. There will also be opportunities to work on the Machine Vision, Data Analysis and Core Engineering aspects of our product. Your contribution will be towards a pipeline of our products that will make surgery safer.

Knowledge of NLP text mining, especially information extraction from clinical data and data from electronic health records as well as past experience in working with Healthcare Informatics is desirable.

Eligibility
Essential Criteria
MSc or PhD in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science with a solid knowledge of Engineering and expertise in NLP. Candidates are required to have at least 3+ years of professional experience in building Machine Learning models.
  • Excellent coding ability in Python and familiarity with the Python scientific stack (particularly numpy, pandas, matplotlib and sklearn) as evidence by code provided in a GitHub account
  • Hands-on expertise in developing Natural Language Processing based solutions.
  • Demonstrated NLP expertise through scientific publications and/or successful product development;
  • Deep understanding of clustering and classification techniques, and algorithms
  • Comfortable working with semi-structured/unstructured data, object-oriented programming as well as unit-testing and other software engineering practices.
  • Expertise in using machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch
Desirable Skills
  • Passion for healthcare innovations and its potential impact
  • Experience working with domain ontologies such as ICD9 & 10, MeSH, MedRA, RxNorm, SNOMED CT
  • Knowledge of healthcare informatics and/or information management
  • Familiarity with healthcare and life science information (e.g. EHRs and ClinicalTrials.gov) and how linguistics plays a role in patient care.
  • Previous experience integrating with electronic health records
